Unit 5 - Rational Number Arithmetic

(Beginning Dec. 11th) - Students extend addition and subtraction from fractions to all rational numbers. Then, students represent quantities with number line diagrams and tables of numerical expressions with signed numbers. This allows products of signed numbers to be interpreted in terms of position and direction, using the understanding that numbers that are additive inverses are located at the same distance but opposite sides of the starting point. Finally, students begin working with linear equations in one variable that have rational number coefficients.

Geography

Welcome to 7th Grade World Geography!

When students return from holiday break we will be starting a short unit looking at different types of governments found in the world. This will be a quick, introductory unit as students will work more with government in 8th grade and high school but we feel it is important to begin exposing them to these various ideas.

Essential Question for this unit: How do systems of government affect the roles of citizens across the globe?

After our government unit, we will dive into an intro to economics unit where we will focus mainly on macro economics. Students will learn about different types of economic systems as well as important economic concepts such as supply and demand, buying power, opportunity cost, and many other. We will also spend a little time studying personal finance so students will learn about saving, investing and budgeting their money. Please talk about money with your students and see what they have to say!

Essential Question for this unit: How does studying economics give us more insight into a country or region?

Outside Activities:

Looking for something to do outside of class?  Students have a number of activities on Schoology that focus on our social studies vocabulary.  You can also watch/read the news with your student and discuss things that are going on in the world.
